5 Tips for Keeping Your Fresh-Cut Flowers Blooming Longer
Share
Welcome to the Firefly Farm blog, where we share our passion for fresh cut flowers, haskap berries, and whatever else the future holds! Whether you’ve picked up a bouquet from our farm or are enjoying flowers from your own garden, we want to help you keep them looking fresh and beautiful for as long as possible. Here are five simple tips to extend the life of your blooms.
1. Trim Those Stems
Before placing your flowers in a vase, always trim about an inch off the stems at an angle. This helps them absorb water more efficiently. Be sure to use sharp scissors or pruning shears to avoid crushing the stems, which can reduce water uptake.
2. Change the Water Regularly
Fresh water is key to keeping flowers vibrant. Change the water every two days, and rinse the vase to remove any bacteria. Adding a small splash of floral preservative or a homemade mix of sugar and vinegar can help keep bacteria at bay.
3. Keep Them Cool
Flowers thrive in cooler environments, so try to keep your arrangements away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and fruit (which releases ethylene gas that can cause flowers to wilt faster). A cool, shaded spot is ideal.
4. Remove Wilting Blooms
As flowers begin to wilt, remove them from the arrangement to prevent bacteria from spreading to the healthy blooms. This small step can make a big difference in the longevity of your bouquet.
5. Feed Your Flowers
If you don’t have floral food, try making your own! A teaspoon of sugar and a few drops of bleach or vinegar in the water can provide nourishment and prevent bacterial growth. Your flowers will thank you with longer-lasting beauty.
At Firefly Farm, we love seeing our customers enjoy the beauty of fresh-cut flowers in their homes. Whether you’re brightening up your space or gifting a bouquet to a loved one, following these simple tips will help you make the most of your blooms.
